The transition from nursery to a toddler’s room is a momentous occasion in a parent’s life. As your little one grows and develops their own personality, their living space should evolve with them. The toddler room is not just about rearranging furniture; it’s a celebration of your child’s journey into independence and self-expression.

Planning the Transition

The first step in creating a big girl/boy room is thoughtful planning. Aaira started outgrowing her crib at around 2.5 years, and this may differ from child to child. This will also depend on if they have a separate play area or their room & the play area is common. We have a separate play area downstairs for Aaira, so her room is mostly for sleeping & playing when we are all upstairs, mostly over the weekends. Consider your toddler’s personality, interests, and preferences. Are they drawn to certain colors, themes, or characters? Engage your little one in the process, making them feel like an active participant in the transformation. This collaboration ensures that the room reflects their unique personality.

Color & Theme

Color & theme plays a crucial role in creating the desired ambiance. Whether it’s princesses, animals, superheroes, or a whimsical wonderland, choose a timeless theme that can adapt as they grow, allowing for easy updates as their interests evolve. For our Wallpaper, we chose a modern pink blush art that isn’t specific to a particular theme & we can just make cosmetic updates (think of paintings, toys etc.) to ensure we can adjust the decor according to her evolving interests. The wallpaper is linked here- Wall Blush Pink Wallpaper There was an Elsa, Animals & Mickey era for her & currently we are moving towards princesses, art/coloring & building tiles.

Functional & Stylish furniture + Accents

Invest in furniture that is both functional and stylish. Toddler-sized beds, dressers, and storage solutions should be age-appropriate and easily accessible for your child. We invested in a bunk bed because that makes it so much fun for her to climb up & read books & then slide down. We chose Twin over full as we wanted to be able to lay down with her to snuggle or just make it an extended play area. I have linked the bed we got plus lot of other options here- Shop Toddler Beds. Make sure you measure the space and buy accordingly. This bed also had an option to keep the slide & the canopy on either side, so we were able to place it in a way that gave use more space. We got the mattresses from Ikea & she has been sleeping so well (and longer) in her big girl bed! Linking some fun Toddler bedding options including the one below here- Shop Toddler Bedding

Her Closet is Pax systems from Ikea that is easily customizable. We also made adjustments to the closet based on the size of her clothing etc. See Nursery & Toddler room versions below.

We also had a chest+changing table in her room that we ended up taking out as we don’t have the need for it anymore. You can either repurpose these pieces or sell/donate them based on the condition.

As for the decor, we added a couple of plants for greenery (faux) but otherwise kept it minimal as I’m sure those interests will grow when she is a little older. From an accessibility standpoint, we brought her book shelves down, so she can pick her own books. She has a big bookshelf downstairs in her play area, so these are just selective books.

  1. Beautiful setup. One query do you have one more closet other than this Ikea closet? Also when its open is it fine to keep clothes without covered with door ?
